Getting started

How long should a life story book be?

· 5 min read

A typical life story book runs 25,000 to 60,000 words, which prints at roughly 120 to 260 pages once photographs are included. Fifty answered questions at 500 to 1,000 words each lands squarely in that range. Length is the wrong thing to optimise for: a 120-page book that gets read matters more than a 400-page one that does not, and families almost never report wishing a life story had been longer.

Words to pages, roughly

Page count depends on trim size, type size and how many photographs you include, but a working conversion for a standard hardback is about 250 to 300 words per page.

  • 25,000 words: about 100 to 120 pages. A focused book covering the main chapters of a life.
  • 40,000 words: about 160 to 190 pages. The most common finished length.
  • 60,000 words: about 240 to 260 pages. Thorough, and a serious undertaking.
  • 100,000 words and beyond: possible, but very few first-time writers finish one.

What that means per sitting

The number that matters is not the total but the individual answer. Fifty questions answered at 500 words each is 25,000 words. The same fifty at 1,000 words each is 50,000.

Five hundred words is about ten to fifteen minutes of writing, or eight minutes of talking. Framed that way, a full-length book is a series of short sittings rather than a large project.

Photographs change the page count more than people expect

A photograph with a caption typically occupies between a third and a full page. Sixty photographs can therefore add 30 to 50 pages on their own, which is why a 30,000-word manuscript can print as a substantial 180-page book.

This is worth knowing before you start worrying about word count: the finished object is usually thicker than the manuscript suggests.

Why longer is not better

The failure mode of family life stories is not brevity. It is padding: chronological completeness, lists of dates, and passages included from obligation rather than interest.

Families reliably remember specific scenes, not coverage. One vivid page about a kitchen outlasts thirty pages of dutiful chronology, and a book that gets finished and read beats a longer one abandoned at chapter four.

Common questions

How many words is a typical life story book?
Between 25,000 and 60,000 words, printing at roughly 120 to 260 pages with photographs. Fifty answered questions at 500 to 1,000 words each falls in that range.
How many pages will my life story be?
Around 250 to 300 words per page for a standard hardback, plus a third to a full page per photograph. Sixty photographs can add 30 to 50 pages on their own.
Is a short life story book worth doing?
Yes. A 100-page book that gets finished and read is worth more than a 400-page one abandoned partway. Families remember specific scenes, not comprehensive coverage.
